Housing stability: rental housing without support, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and transitional shelter

Family Housing provides resources to meet the needs of families in crisis. Seven scattered site transitional rental units for young families in Evanston house young mothers and their children.  Families receive rent assistance and ongoing case management while mothers work on education or vocational training.

Permanent Supportive Housing units are currently occupied by 14 individuals and 5 families.Scattered site rental units in Evanston and nearby communities provide the opportunity for residents to maintain their ties to the community while continuing to work with case managers.

The Prevention program provides financial assistance for rent, security deposits, and utility arrearage to keep families and individuals housed.  Through Connections, over $500,000 in assistance from the State of Illinois was provided to residents of Evanston and nearby communities in suburban Cook County in Fiscal Year 2009.  However, due to the state’s economic crisis, these funds have been drastically reduced during Fiscal Year 2010.  Limited funds are now available through the federal Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program.

Children meet regularly with a Children’s Specialist who concentrates on self esteem issues and serves as a liaison for child care and school related issues.
