Employment Program

With the current high unemployment rate, it is difficult for anyone to find a job--much less someone who is considered "difficult to employ" such as someone just returning from prison, someone dealing with barriers such as mental illness or substance abuse, or even someone who merely has gaps in their resume.

And, as with housing, not everyone has the same needs. We work with clients to maximize their individual abilities to acquire and keep jobs that pay a living wage. Our Employment Program has the following components:

  • Job Readiness Training
Connections helps unemployed and underemployed clients get ready to work. Our 5-day workshop supplements those provided through the local WorkNet to help clients use their core strengths in navigating today's difficult environment. The workshop covers an overview of the employment process and environment, job searching, resume development, interviewing, interpersonal skills and etiquette, and the opportunity to participate in role-playing and mock interviews.
  • Job Counseling and Case Management
We provide individual support as well to help clients prepare for employment and find a job. We also provide follow-up support after clients find a job. Case management includes an assessment of barriers to employment and assistance in overcoming those barriers, including transportation assistance, help with childcare, and support in finding clothing and preparing for interviews.
  • Job Club
To provide regular ongoing support for clients who are searching for a job or who are newly employed, we are starting a job club. Clients can meet weekly to share frustrations and successes, provide support to each other, and strategize together on issues they are all confronting.
  • Job Development
We are continuously developing relationships with local employers to help clients find full-time emplyment. Some employers who already support us include Sodexho, Harborquest, Starbucks, and Brown, Kaplan & Liss.
